Choosing a secondary sealant for insulating glass

Insulating glass typically employs a two-seal system. The first seal, butyl adhesive, primarily serves to block moisture and gases; the second sealant works in conjunction to form the peripheral sealing system, so material selection must be considered in the context of the entire insulating glass assembly.

Compatibility between the second sealant and the butyl seal is a key consideration. Materials containing mineral white oil may adversely affect the butyl seal, causing black contamination or seal failure; selection cannot be based solely on appearance.

This 2024 application guide references GB 24266-2009 and GB/T 29755 standards. Material selection should also take into account the actual structure and usage conditions of the insulating glass, focusing on compatibility among all components of the sealing system.
